Family Portrait Mood Board

What is a mood board anyway?

I get this question often, so let me tell you about it why it’s an important tool in my photography process.

A mood board is a visual tool that communicates a concept and visual creative options and ideas.

I believe that collaboration is crucial in creating interesting and impactful photos. In order to create a successful photograph everyone involved needs to be on the same page. My goal when photographing people is to create images that evoke a strong sense of place that invites the viewer into a moment in time - as if they have stumbled upon a scene that feels like a secret. My style is emotional, it’s about the unique feeling a viewer gets from the image - that feeling that makes you want to look again, and for a little bit longer.

So, back to the mood board and collaboration - since this style can be difficult to explain I create mood boards to help explain my aesthetic and visual direction.

Below is my family portrait mood board - I use it as a starting point in the collaboration process. If you hate it, you may not want to work with me. If you love it, or even like it, let’s talk.
